Marc Coma has won the penultimate stage of the Rally dos Sertões in Brazil to open up a 15-minute lead in the bike category.
The Spaniard completed the 183km stage from Balsas and Teresina in 2h02min12s – a minute faster than his closest rival, Brazilian Felipe Zanol. That result gives the two-time Dakar champion a huge advantage going into the final stage of the rally.
“It was a very beautiful and technical special, with plenty of navigation,” he said. “It was difficult and complicated, requiring much from the rider and equipment. But I still cannot think about the title, because we still have two days and lots of road ahead.
“The special tomorrow should be very hard again, I’ve been told that it will be one of the hardest in the race, and I will stay focused and only then think about the arrival in Fortaleza.”
For Zanol it was a disappointing day, and he was left to rue what he felt was a missed chance to close the gap on Coma.
“The day was very complicated,” he said. “I got lost in the beginning of the special, Coma passed me and it took me about four minutes to find my way. In the final liaison, I took a dumb fall. I've had better days in the Rally. Tomorrow's special will present variations of floor, some with stones and we must be very careful not to fall.”
