This weekend there's a whole Lolla shaking going on as Chicago sees the unlikely combination of Lady Gaga headlining the Lollapalooza Festival along with the likes of Hot Chip, The Strokes and 2ManyDJs. Let’s take a closer look at some of the bands who’ll be rocking Grant Park...

Lollapalooza kicks off this weekend in Chicago’s Grant Park, and what a line-up. The festival, which is now based at one site rather than touring the US, is fast becoming one of the key events in the US music calendar, and last year’s attracted 225,000 music lovers. So who are they flocking to see?

LADY GAGA
She may not seem like a festival headliner, but the Lady can rock. In a 40-minute slot at last year’s Glastonbury she had 27 costume changes, exploding tits and managed to win over a field of sun-baked festival-goers despite only being in the UK public eye for about four months. Knowing full well how to “do” spectacle and having the likes of Bad Romance up her sleeve, it should be one of the greatest things ever.

SOUNDGARDEN
As seems to be the way with modern popular music, soon no band will be split up for more than six months. Soundgarden, who were the heaviest of the Seattle grunge scene in the early 90, have come back. That’s back from clowning around with Audioslave and various solo projects for the last few years. Good thing too.

ARCADE FIRE
On the brink of releasing their new album, The Suburbs, the advanced reviews for which suggests the many-tentacled Montrealers have produced one of the greatest albums of all time. And from what we’ve heard here, there’s nothing to say they haven’t.

DEVO
Originally they tried to change the world with their unique headwear and jerky songs about whipping, but there weren’t many takers at the time. But after a 20-year gap between albums, they released this year’s Something For Everybody and have been lighting up the festival circuit. What a difference two decades in the wilderness can make.

2MANYDJS
The Daweale brothers have, over the last decade, become THE party-starters of choice. Along with their animated sleeve backdrop and a crate of floor-fillers, people who find it impossible to shake a leg to this need a stern talking to.

THE STROKES
Remember The Strokes? Of course you do. They rejuvenated the skinny tie industry at the start of the last decade with their smashing debut Is This It channelling the likes of Television, Lou Reed and 80s New Wave. Well, the good news is that they are back, regrouped and recording a fourth album, but not before they’ve played a few shows across the summer. Relive those heady days again!
