Discover the unique Brazilian game of Rebatida, a form of soccer that rewards skill and creativity as well as goals. As Sao Paulo gets set to host the first ever championship, Red Bull Rebatida, from May 22-30, we give you the lowdown...
Sao Paulo...
The Brazilian city where the game was born. Usually played on half-courts or pitches, Rebatida has proved popular with kids in Sao Paulo due to its simplicity. All you need is one goal, a ball and two players a side to have a match.
Rebatida...
Spanish for hit. Players are rewarded for hitting objects such as posts, the crossbar, or even the goalkeeper as they build their move towards scoring a goal. An ordinary goal, or ‘gol simple’ is only worth one point, whereas hitting the crossbar as part of a team’s move is worth 10 alone.
Dribbling...
As well as rewarding ‘hits’, players are rewarded for dribbles that they make before scoring. Each successful dribble is worth three points to the attacking team’s overall score.
3...
The number of ‘penalty’ kicks taken by each player. While one team member is taking the kick, the other player must wait for the rebound. As soon as the defending team’s goalkeeper has control of the ball, the game moves to the next kick.
Points...
The way players score points is as follows...
Gol simple – 1 point
Rebound from goalkeeper – 3 points
Dribble – 3 points
Rebound from a post – 5 points
Rebound from the crossbar – 10 points
Rebound from the angle of crossbar and post – 15 points
So, if a player hits the post with his original kick, his team-mate then dribbles and they score, that team would be awarded eight points.
Officials...
For Red Bull Rebatida there will be two officials for each match. The on-field referee and the table judge, when the referee tells him to, the judge will reveal the scores of each ‘penalty.’
