With the amount of smoke that was pouring out the back of a wide variety of single speed bikes, one would be forgiven for thinking that there were indeed “Tyres of Fire” present on a disused stretch of road in an Albany industrial estate in Auckland on Sunday.

The “Red Bull Tyres of Fire” saw the cities finest fixed gear enthusiasts and technical masters of the common proverbial bicycle skid, lay down some rubber in various forms and lengths of locked rear wheel defiance. Young and old alike were brought together in smoky unison with a common bond, the love of skidding.

How far can a fixed gear or single speed bike skid for?

That was the question which needed answering and all in attendance where keen to skid themselves into the record books and find out. The answer? ….well that came in the form a young gentleman by the name of Ken White who managed to peel out a truly impressive winning skid of 270m. Ken smashed the previous record by a whopping 105m. What did he win you ask? Tyres of course, and lots of them.

One thing is for sure, Ken White in no way should be embarrassed of the skid mark he left on a disused stretch of road in an industrial estate in Albany.

Always remember, where there is smoke there is fire!
