Sampology is undoubtedly one of the most original and much loved artists in today's very cluttered musical landscape.
Sampology is a DJ. And we're not talking your steak and three vegie solid club set here. He's a highly accomplished technician on the 1s and 2s, (and sometime 3s) cutting his teeth in the early days as turntablist for a number of live bands including Soma Rasa and
the Vinyl Slingers, which saw him doing festivals like Big Day Out in Australia at the tender young age of 17. Not old enough to swig a beer, but seasoned enough to rock crowds of thousands at Australia's grand-daddy of summer festivals. He's also one of the most consistently brilliant and versatile club Djs who's not shy of mixing up his styles to suit the show. One week you might find him creating mayhem with his mash-up style sets in intimate clubs changing the vibe of the room to some kind of ridiculously wicked house party. Another week you'll stumble into bassbin laden club night with Sam delivering a fast paced performance, skilfully bringing together many forms of club music at many tempos. Although Sampology has never competed in any kind of turntablist competition his technical skills and creativity frequently see him billed alongside international hip hop heavy hitters. In the words of Peaches - “Sampology makes me wanna break dance.” We couldn't have summed up Sampology the DJ better ourselves.
Sampology is an AVDJ. Without a doubt Australia's leading Audio Visual DJ, his “Super Visual” performances have garnered much attention from around the world from esteemed colleagues and excited punters alike. First there was the Super Visual Disco Party, launched in 2008 in Brisbane, which then toured to 8 cities nationally. Australian theatre company Strut n Fret swiftly added Sampology to their internationally acclaimed “Tom Tom Crew” which toured internationally in 2009, playing sold out shows at The Victory Theatre on Broadway in Manhattan, Udder Belly in London and a sold out season at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Following a little video edit of Parker's “Where's My Monkey” which has had close to half a million views on You Tube, Sampology launched the Super Visual Smackdown, spreading his Super Visual love at 17 dates across Australia & New Zealand, including a Sydney Festival performance with one of Sampology's favourite fellow AVDJs, Yoda. “Sampology is one creative dude” Yoda said after playing the double bill with him. People's intrigue and wonder in this technical whizz-kid started to gather some serious momentum. Sampology was one of 6 artists invited to board the Bacardi Express with La Roux on an east-coast train tour of Australia, and was the only Australian artist invited to perform at one of the UK's finest festivals, Big Chill. He was invited personally by Ninja Tune's visual pioneer Hexstatic to close Solid Steel AV stage at the 2010 festival. With his reputation proceeding him internationally, its little wonder he received a number of offers for Super Visual Smackdown sideshows, which toured across England and Europe in August & September. Leaving promoters and punters gobsmacked by his unique talent, a flood of international offers followed, resulting in a return tour to the UK and Europe in December 2010. ‘On the decks you have Sampology who has turned spinning records into an art form as he combines sound and vision to create a multimedia sensation’ British Theatre Guide,
Sampology is a producer. His first and only single “Back on the Drums” released in 2007 reached #1 on the Juno charts and sold in excess of 1000 copies of vinyl, selling out in three months. He was personally selected by Australian sensation PNAU to remix their second single “Baby” in 2008. His next remix release for Two Fresh feat. Lady Chann dropped on Australian label Klub Kids in July. Somehow, in amongst the Super Visual world takeover madness, Sampology found the time to write his debut EP, collaborating
with Africa's Spoek Mothambo, Swedens' Gnucci Banana and the UK's Lady Chann. It's due for release in 2011.
Whether as a DJ, and AVDJ or a producer, Sampology has that rare knack of playing and creating something you've heard (or seen) before and giving it to you in a completely different way. Stimulating our eyes and our ears while never failing to get our feet moving, Sampology continues to creep into the hearts of music lovers around the world as an all time favourite.
