Red Bull Jibmunks is a very tricky snowboarding contest indeed, and we mean that literally. But how do the tricks and stats add up to a top comp? Find out here…
60...
Red Bull Jibmunks is an open snowboarding event in Switzerland that invites up to 60 participants to show off their tricks on a traditional slope with only natural obstacles. Twelve pros and eight legends will be entertaining an estimated 5,000 onlookers in Grindelwald.
2,166...
Red Bull Jibmunks takes place on the summit of First, a 2,166m (7,106ft) peak in the shadow (just) of the 2,928m (9,606ft) Schwarzhorn, in the Bernese Alps – so it’s a big mountain, but not the tallest around. So, the name ‘First’ therefore has nothing to do with numbers… obviously…
½...
For ‘half’, read ‘halfpipe hero’ Markus Keller, one of the big stars in attendance, temporarily abandoning the aforementioned pipe for the natural inclines of the Swiss Alps. Incidentally, Markus’s snowboarding stance is regular, 15º front, -12º rear, and 23 inches (58cm) wide – all useful for boarding when you’re upside down.
189...
Actually, Markus has had an eventful time lately. Back in May, when the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland erupted for the first time in 189 years, air travel worldwide was massively disrupted for weeks. Markus enjoyed mixed fortunes. Stranded in New York, he was unable to return to Europe to compete, so was forced to party on in the USA for longer. Less fortunately, he ended up at an ‘after-after-party’ in someone’s apartment, where his friends decided to remove and dispose of his trousers while he slept like a baby on the sofa. So, the next day, Markus had to walk through the streets of New York and back to his hotel with no trousers on. So, the ‘unlucky number’ here is ‘2’ because the stolen pants in question were a pair… At least he’s safely back home in Switzerland for Red Bull Jibmunks. But why not watch a video of Markus here from Onboard Magazine, the end of which captures those magic moments in the Big Apple?

Like we said, Markus has been a busy man. He and fellow snow-shredder Stephan Maurer have been showcasing a number of tricks – seven so far – in the lead-up to Red Bull Jibmunks. Why not click these links to watch Markus and Stephan demonstrate spins, buttering, flips, fastplants, polejams, frontside rocks and bonks. By the way, Markus, being Swiss, is speaking German in the clips, but the language is pure Jibmunks. Enjoy!
