A city whose literal translation is 'little cliff' was surely made to host the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series and, for the second year in a row, it kicks off the tour. People have been passing between the Saint Nicolas Tower and the Tour de la Chaine to enter the city of La Rochelle since 1345. On May 15 2010 the 42m-high landmark and the former jail with its pentagonal design will again be symbolic as the world's best divers – among them Frenchmen Hassan Mouti and Cyrille Oumedjkane – step onto the platform at the top of Saint Nicolas and plunge into a new era in cliff diving. With a long tradition of fishing and trading, the settlement of La Rochelle was once the largest on the French Atlantic coast. The seaport of 78,000 inhabitants has maintained much of its old architecture, making it one of the most picturesque cities on the coast and a great venue to kick off 2010.
