- About
- The Indian Grand Prix will be the 17th race of the Formula 1 season and takes place at the Buddh International Circuit, on 30th October 2011 for the very first time. Plans have been in place for Calcutta to host a Grand Prix from as far back as 1997, but several difficulties prevented this from ever taking place and it wasn't until 2007, when, after months of negotiations the Indian Olympic Association and Bernie Ecclestone announced a provisional agreement for India to host its first Grand Prix in the 2009 F1 season. Two further reassesments since then saw the timeframe pushed further back and Indian F1 fans can be forgiven for thinking the date would never arrive. But arrive it most certainly will, as the world's driving elite pull into the brand-spanking-new Buddh International Circuit. The circuit will be roughly 5.14km (3.19m) and was designed, like so many others, by F1 supremo Hermann Tilke. It will be spread over an area of 875 acres and have an initial seating capacity of around 150,000. There are plans to increase this to 200,000 in the near future. The sprawling circuit will be a part of Jaypee Green Sports city and will also be used for hosting one or more rounds of Moto GP championships in 2012. In all, it has 16 largely medium speed corners where F1 cars will lap at an average speed of 210 kph. The back straight will reach 320 kmph making it one of the fastest tracks in the world.
